DOWNTOWN PLAN UPDATE

Background:
In February 1999, the City of Spokane adopted the Plan for a New Downtown as part of its Comprehensive Plan. Since the creation of the Plan, over $3 billion has been invested in the Downtown Core. The Plan provides design guidelines, zoning regulations and targeted projects for City staff, developers, and business leaders alike to follow in order to ensure vibrant, safe and proactive measures as we rebuild Downtown.

Purpose:
Updating the Downtown Plan is critical. Most major projects laid out in the Plan have been completed and growth is occurring far beyond the imagination of the pioneers who helped shape Downtown’s regulations in 1999. Since then, new development issues and opportunities have arisen and now it is necessary to clarify certain zoning and code regulations. A targeted list of the next series of projects that will mold Downtown’s future must be established. A shift from exclusively economic development initiatives to more urban design and managing growth is necessary within the updating process.
